Sprinkler Head Leaking at the Base? Causes and Fixes
If water is pooling or bubbling around a sprinkler head instead of spraying out of the nozzle, something below the surface has failed. It's one of the most common repairs we see on Front Range lawns, and it's worth fixing quickly.
Common causes
- Cracked head body from a mower, vehicle, or foot traffic.
- Snapped riser or swing joint below the head, often after frost heave.
- Failed fitting at the lateral line the head connects to.
- Worn wiper seal, which leaks briefly as the head pops up and down.
- Low-head drainage: water draining out of the lowest head after the zone shuts off.
Why it matters
A broken head can lose a lot of water during every scheduled run, and the soggy soil around it can sink. Some water providers also require leaks to be fixed quickly. Denver Water, for example, asks customers to fix leaking or broken sprinkler systems within 10 days.
What you can check
Run the zone and watch. A small leak only while the head pops up is usually the seal. A steady flow that continues is usually the head, riser, or fitting. Water at the lowest head after shutoff points to drainage, which a check valve can fix.
When to call
If the leak continues, the ground is soft, or you can't see where the water is coming from, it's time for a proper sprinkler repair and leak detection visit. Heading into fall, it's also smart to fix it before your sprinkler blowout.
