Why Is One Sprinkler Zone Not Working?

When every zone runs except one, the pipes are rarely the problem. A single dead zone almost always points to that zone's valve or the electrical signal reaching it.

The usual suspects

• Controller station: the zone isn't programmed, or that output has failed.
• Wiring: a cut wire or corroded splice in the valve box, often after digging or years of moisture.
• Solenoid: the small electric part on top of the valve can burn out.
• Valve diaphragm: debris or a torn diaphragm can keep the valve from opening.
• Flow control closed: the handle on top of the valve may have been turned down.

Quick checks you can do

First, confirm the zone is programmed and try running it manually from the controller. If it still won't run, open the valve box and see whether the flow control is turned closed. Many valves also have a manual bleed screw; if the zone runs when you open it, the valve works and the problem is electrical.
